Four cars raced east across the desert against the sunset, mountain shadows spilling outward faster than we could drive. A sharp mountain ridge to the south held back black thunder clouds stained red by the fading sun. We turned down a rough dirt road lined with warning signs of narrowness, steepness, and Mexican nationals.

I am dying for my camera right now. This little town perched among the high mountains of arid southern Texas is a mess of crumbling adobe, peeling paint, sun bleached and rusted signs, hiding a defiant outpost of eclectic artists siphoning off a few drops of the tourist money flowing towards Big Bend National Park.
